Thursday is Thanksgiving in the good ole USA…a day of family fights, food, naps, laughs, pie, drinks, football, Black Jack and clove cigarettes. I hope covered it all. Also a good day to show gratitude. I’m sure you know where this is going. Yes…my gratitude list. I had to summarize the list or we’d be here until The Days Of 47 Pioneer’s Day parade.
Be real. That damn fiscal cliff seems real. Accept the market and economy as it is, not as we want it to be. In this economy, be ready for job transitions. Prepare an emergency career plan to help your readiness. This plan should help you transition inside or outside your company. Accept the economy for what it is and take action. As an HR Pro are you helping people take action? If no, then what are you doing? Many people…They are afraid. Step up and help them.
There is an inner circle quickly forming. Did a guest post today over at HireVue, about this topic. Listen up social media players and haters….lots of banter about LinkedIn’s new endorsement feature. Basically it allows you an easy way to make a little gesture and show recognition to your connections whom you value. The Social Media Examiner provides a good overview, HERE. Check it out if needed, but think of it like an online version of flair.
Glocal. Glocalized. Glocalization. What is it? howstuffworks tells us “glocalization is the answer to the problems of globalization”. They took “global” and “local” and made glocal. The term was invented by Japan in the 1980s and is now a popular buzzword. I hate buzzwords, but it’s neat to know executives realize they can’t globalize and standardize everything. They need to appeal to the locals.
Back in my entrepreneurial lawn mowing days as a 12 year old boy I earned a rabbit. Based on my reputation a guy named Hyrum asked me to take care of his yard for a month while he was out of town. I worked hard. Irrigated his garden, mowed grass, pulled weeds, and watered flowers. Even avoided working on Sundays per Hyrum’s request. After one month, Hyrum came home and gave me a rabbit for my services. WTF? A rabbit.
Keep moving forward when you can. Stop and rest when you can’t. Get up and keep moving forward again. The elections are over. We know who our President of the U.S.A is now. Happy or sad. Get over it and move forward. Congratulations to our President Barack Obama.
No matter who our President is…Your ideas and dreams will get blocked. Move around the block. Move over the block. Move through the block. Change your mind about the ideas if needed. Just keep moving forward. Do not wait for our President to approve it.
Figure it out. I have been trying for over a few years. The cloud and social trend that is. In his book, “Cloud Surfing”, Thomas Koulopoulos finds that in 1985 the average length of a phone call was 9 minutes. Today the average length is less than one minute. Where did this time go? How do people share ideas now? Figure it out. People connect in different ways. You might want to figure that out for your career.
Hey try this…
Think about one of your problems. With the thought of your problem in your mind, go find a room with no windows and a light dimmer switch. Turn it off. That is your problem. Your view is dark. Dark causes anxiety. Anxiety creates prescription medicine. Healthcare loves this. More money for them. They know you will be back for more. It is a cycle. Oops my ADD medicine just kicked back in. Back to the light switch. Now slowly turn the switch to on. As the room gets lighter, your view gets better. Look around and you can see everything in the room. The good and the bad. Deal with it and wean off the prescription medication. Go create something good with that anxiety.
Good morning. Take a sip of your coffee, tea, or favorite religious beverage. Let’s talk about coming out of the something closet. You have ideas. They have ideas. He has ideas. I have ideas. Why are these ideas sitting in a closet? Please share someday.
Good ideas awaken engineers like Delroy at 2:39 AM. Hey Delroy, they (i.e., employer, friends, family) do not care if you tell them. They want to know the real Delroy. He should find a circle of five different generations who will listen to Delroy. This mash-up of people will provide fuel for innovation that he will have never experienced.
